Passport and Visa
All visitors wishing to enter Tanzania require a valid passport and a return or onward ticket alongside an entry or re-entry visa that is duly endorsed. These visas can be easily obtained (cost $50) on arrival at the main entry point that includes international airports and land border ports or from any Tanzanian Embassy or Consulate abroad. Online visas can be obtained here, and these e-visas typically processed within 10 days and allow travel for up to 90 days,
Health
A valid yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for entry to Tanzania if you are coming from an infected country. You are advised to take anti-malaria tablets and make use of mosquito nets and insect sprays wherever possible. Travel health insurance is also recommended giving you complete medical and repatriation coverage. A temporary Flying Doctor Membership is recommended to cover emergency air medical evacuation which we arrange and provide free of cost for all our clients.
Air Travel
Many international airlines, such as KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Ethiopian Airlines, operate in and out of Tanzania through both Dar-es-Salaam and Kilimanjaro International Airports (which is the nearest large airport to Arusha). In addition, the island of Zanzibar is also served by international, charter and domestic air carriers. An international flight to Nairobi and a bus ride over the border to Arusha is an alternative method for many visitors and suitable transfers can be arranged by ourselves upon request. Domestic air travel within the country is by the national airline, Air Tanzania, or either with Precision Air, Regional Air, ZanAir and Air Excel. There are now daily scheduled flights to many popular locations from Arusha that can accommodate up to 45 passengers. Most national parks and towns have air strips accessible by smaller planes.
Departures
Baggage is weighed at check-in counters and may be inspected by custom officials. Airport tax of $30 is levied on all visitors departing Tanzania by air on international flights – in most instances, this fee is already included in your airline ticket. Airport departure tax for domestic flights is around $6 with all fees being subject to change. There is no departure tax when travelling by road. Visitors departing by air from Kenya must pay the departure tax fee at the airport.
Customs
Personal effects such as binoculars, cameras, film, may be imported (temporarily) free of duty. However a custom bond may be demanded from visitors bringing in professional video/filming equipment, radios, tape recorders and musical instruments in order to ensure the goods are re-exported. Visitors buying local handicrafts must keep cash sales receipts in case of presentation to customs officials upon departure.
