The largest of Tanzania’s national parks, the Serengeti is world-famous for playing host to one of the most breathtaking wildlife spectacles. Here, situated up on a high plateau, it serves as the main stage for one of the most remarkable natural events on the planet: the ‘Great Migration’. Over two million Wildebeest, Zebra and Thomson’s Gazelle continue on their annual long circular migration across the region´s vast open plains and acacia woodland scenery following the seasonal rains in search of new fresh pasture. There are times when every visible ridge is a moving mass of huge columns of advancing zebras and ungainly wildebeest stretch as far as the eye can see, whilst all across these rich grasslands an array of hungry predators follow ever-closely in unison, and accompanied throughout by the ever-present scavenging hyenas and vultures seeking rich-pickings. The Serengeti’s rich complex savannah ecosystem, featuring thick riverine vegetation, natural springs, and rocky granite outcrops – known locally as kopjes – provide a crucial water source for a staggering array of wildlife all throughout the seasons.
