From the high montane forest woodland of Kilimanjaro to the sun-baked soda shores of Lake Manyara, this region is a ornithological paradise that offers superb opportunities to see a rich diversity of both migratory and resident birds. We provide private specialist tours for small groups, companies, researchers and professional film photographers, and your personal guide will be on hand to assist you in identifying each species and relating relevant information on their particular habitat and behaviour. Both our management team and guides focus together on providing all our clients with the best-planned bird trip itinerary that have been carefully-designed to consider each of the differing seasons (November to April is the best time as many migratory birds arrive as the rains begin), and also with regard to the specific interests of your group, in order for you not only to see birdlife alone, but to enable you exceptional prime viewing of all the country’s spectacular wildlife and scenery.

DAY 1, 2 & 3: Arrival Day – Arusha National Park

Your personal guide will meet you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your overnight accommodation for a relaxing dinner in preparation for the start of the tour the following morning. The wide range of habitats around Mount Meru offers the opportunity to see many exciting bird species such as Rueppell’s Robin-Chat, Cinnamon-Chested Bee-Eater and Crowned Hawk-Eagle in its montane forest, with higher-up on the mist-enshrouded slopes can be found the shy skulking White-Starred Robin and Brown Woodland-Warbler. And down on the shores of the Momela Lakes are where large resident populations of grebe, pochard and geese species dominate among many varieties of European waterfowl, and with from October to April large flocks of Greater Flamingo join into the affray. The grassland plains around Arusha are home to both Chestnut-Bellied and Yellow-Throated Sandgrouse, and many species of pipit, shrike and larks, with most notably the critically-endangered Beesley’s Lark whose number is now down to around just one hundred pairs. The surrounding hills offer a more scrub habitat of thicket and riparian strips that offer the opportunity to see the highly gregarious Grey-Headed Social-Weaver, Red-Throated Tit, Slate-Colored Boubou, Nubian Woodpecker, Red-Fronted and Black-Throated Barbet and the possibility to see such migratory species here as the Common Nightingale and Spotted Flycatcher.

DAY 7 & 8: Ngorongoro Conservation Area

We now leave the Great Rift Valley and climb to the edge of the magical Ngorongoro crater. Thirty thousand large mammals reside here, of which a larger number of them can simply be seen from a single view point within the crater, whilst all the time vultures soar overhead above the thronging wildlife spectacle in a dramatic scene unequalled on earth. With its towering vertical walls, descending down is akin to entering the Garden of Eden, and where there is a myriad of both grassland and woodland birds awaiting to be discovered. It is a great place to see many striking ground birds such as Kori Bustard, Ostrich and Stork. And due to its abundance of soda lakes, the crater floor also provides a perfect breeding ground for many wader and duck species along with larger Greater Flamingo, Crown Crane and Heron. Here, in patches of flowering Leonotis, you may also be lucky enough to see hovering iridescent purple Tacazee, Bronze and Golden-Winged Sunbirds all competing for its delicious nectar. In the Ngorongoro highlands we will have lots of chances to see a wide variety of smaller alpine species, and in the afternoon take a gentle walk along the rim itself that offers first- class views of a myriad of birds of prey, including the endemic Long-Crested Eagle, and both the Augur and Mountain Buzzard. Sunset is the time for sundowners whilst gazing over the spectacular crater rim.

DAY 9 & 10: Serengeti National Park

Today we enter and explore the vast acacia-studded plains of the Serengeti where large herds of Wildebeest, Zebra and Gazelle, alongside their attendant predators such as Lion and Hyena, are everywhere to be seen. In December through March, when the wildebeest migration is in the south, it can be easy to spot vultures, eagles and other large predatory birds as they look to scavenge off fallen prey with great enthusiasm. Here we will look-out for such species as Tanzanian Red-Billed Hornbill, Meyer’s Parrot, Rufous-Tailed Weaver, Lilac-Breasted Roller, Usambiro Barbet and the Grey-Headed Silverbill. Around Lake Ndutu, we move through the Malanja depression and onto the Serengeti grassland plains where Sandgrouse, Kori Bustard and Ostrich are abundant among a variety of larks, finches and raptors. The mature acacia woodland supports Rufous Chatterer, Black-Faced Babbler, Green Wood-Hoopoe, Bearded and Cardinal Woodpeckers, and the nearby alkaline lakes and swamps are a magnet bowl for the ever-present Widowbirds, Waxbills, Fischer’s Lovebird and the Grey-Breasted Spurfowl.

DAY 11, 12 & 13: Tarangire National Park

Today we set-off on our return journey to enjoy some of the country’s finest birding on our final days, stopping for lunch en-route at the picturesque Gibbs Farm, that is also a good place to see Grosbeak Weaver and Green-Headed Sunbird. The area is renown for being among the best in having around 450 bird species recorded here, including fourty-nine of the country’s sixty species of raptor, and the seasonal home for a vast number of eurasian migrants. The lush grasslands here are full of ground-feeding birds such as the Northern White-Bellied Bustard and both Red-Necked and Yellow-Necked Francolins. In the evening, we indulge ourselves in a leisurely bird drive to glimpse a variety of owls and nightjars, and which is additionally proves to be an excellent opportunity to see many of the park’s nocturnal animals. The next morning we partake in a short drive before going to the camp for lunch and a little afternoon relaxation as later we head-out again for more viewing. Some of the magnificent species you will see include both Red and Yellow-Necked Spurfowl, Lappet-Faced Vulture, Martial Eagle, Long-Crested Eagle and the striking Secretary Bird.
