This national park was designated a World Heritage Site by the United Nations in 1982 due to its unparalleled ecological size and significance. The Rufiji River, and its many tributaries, flows through this wilderness to eventually form an extensive delta and network of lakes, lagoons and channels, that support open grasslands, acacia woodlands, deep swamplands and riverine forests. Well over 450 bird species have been recorded in the wide expanse of the Selous Game Reserve, and populations of Elephant, Buffalo, Hippopotamus, Crocodile, and African Wild Dog are among the largest on the continent, in addition to major concentrations of Black Rhinoceros, Giraffe, Waterbuck, Zebra, Wildebeest, Sable Antelope, Impala, Eland, Greater Kudu, Cheetah, Leopard, Lion, Spotted Hyena and Baboon. Here, walking safaris and riverboat trips offer the chance to view up-close and personal in this exceptional treasured landscape.
